About

An angry cartoon alien, arms crossed, shouting that Mikeynet fills him with uncontrollable rage

What is this

Mikeynet is a website. With things. On it. I made it.

Who?

Oh, right, yeah, sorry, my name is Mike. Years ago, when I was younger and sillier, Mikeynet was my website. But then, it disappeared into the mists of time (I forgot to renew the domain name).

But now? Now it is BACK

Why

Because I miss the old web, that’s why. When I started Mikeynet, the web seemed like a place for people. A place where people could share their opinions, ideas, silly things they could have made.

And that seems to have disappeared. For many many reasons! But one of them is that people have just stopped believing in the joy of making a silly thing and sharing it.

Some of it’s good, some of it’s bad, some of it’s embarrassing, but it’s mine and this is my place and I hope you enjoy it.

AI?

The use of AI is a very contentious issue in creative spaces and for good reason!

The companies are run by lunatics with no regard for the law, they’re built on theft of copyrighted work, and they are taking away jobs and steamrollering their way through the creative industries. Trends that were already well underway - devaluing of‘content’, unreliable platforms, too much stuff - have accelerated so as to it seeming pointless to make anything.

I’m a software developer by trade, and while I resisted for a while, it would ultimately be nuts to not use AI for coding, when it will write something probably better than I would in at least a tenth of the time. And, frankly, I wouldn’t have the time to get this website back up if I hadn’t.

That said, the Mikeynet promise is that while any website text, illustrations and music may have been processed through a computer it will have been created by a human- probably me. Because otherwise, what’s the point? Mikeynet has always been about Things I’ve Made, and if I don’t feel like it’s my work then what’s the point?

If you’re going to get weird on BlueSky go for it.

Calling it content, for example
I reserve the right to change the Mikeynet promise at any time
